Do you know what
lurks in your closet? Are the shelves and hanging racks so jammed full
of clothes (and perhaps other things) that you’ve forgotten
what you own?
Do you pile your newly washed laundry in
your bedroom,
afraid that it will disappear into the black hole if you put it in the
closet?
No worries! With a few closet ideas
and a little bit of work,
your closet can be well-organized, a haven for your wardrobe, and a
calm place to enter.
The first step to ANY good closet
reorganization is to sort. This can take a full day, so set aside a
weekend day, or several evenings in a row. You need to look at every
single piece of clothing and sort it into one of the following piles:
Donate: This pile is for items that you are
getting rid of. If you haven’t worn it in a year (longer for
formal gowns and tuxes, perhaps), say good bye to it!
You obviously
don’t love it enough to wear it, so why hang onto it? If it
has sentimental meaning, take a photo before saying farewell. Every
good organizer will make this the first of their closet ideas to whip
your space into shape.
Trash: This is for garments that are too
stained to donate, or too far gone to repair. In the interest of
recycling and reusing, try to make this a small pile.
Repair: Obviously, here will go your
garments that you’ve been meaning to get to: undone hems;
torn seams; missing buttons. Make a pile, and write a time on your
calendar to take care of them.
If you’re not one to do the
mending yourself (or you are but can’t find the time), drop
them at a tailor. These kinds of repairs are simple and inexpensive to
do.
Keep: Into this pile goes everything
you’re keeping. Be real about this. You must be realistic
about what you’re actually going to wear again. Cull, cull,
cull!
