Choosing a type of
closet system to put in your space can be a difficult choice.
Let’s go over a few of the popular types of
closet
designs,
so you can make an informed decision.
First is builder’s grade
ventilated shelving. Often known as “wire”
shelving, this is usually what’s in your house or apartment
when you move in.
Typically it is low-grade steel, dipped in a
plastic
coating. It is often supported by angled pieces and drywall anchors. It
is not adjustable, and it doesn’t hold much weight.
Be wary
of stacking very large amounts of clothing or (in the pantry) canned
goods on this type of shelving, because the supporting brackets are
prone to buckling, and you may end up with a nice mountain of clothes
on your closet floor.
Next, let’s consider ventilated
shelving at the home improvement centers. A step up from
builder’s grade, it allows you to create your own closet
designs.
The flexibility of a system like this is its
real strong
point, and you can play with it and make it your own. It is stronger
than the builders’ systems, but you must be very careful to
install it properly. These systems can have dipped rubber coatings or
epoxy coatings, like Rubbermaid’s closet systems.
There is a higher grade of ventilated closet
system as well. It is usually found in specialty stores (storage and
organization). These systems typically have epoxy-bonded coatings that
won’t get sticky or peel off, and they hold a much higher
weight of items than other ventilated shelving systems.
Usually,
designers are on hand to help you with your closet designs for free,
guaranteeing a great space. These systems often have upgrades available
as well, offering a more upscale look than typical ventilated systems.
The highest end of closet systems are the
cabinetry-look built-ins. Their biggest advantage is in their rich look
and good storage.
Typically, a designer will come to your
house and
create a design for you. The downside to these systems is that they are
set – there is no flexibility in changing the system around.
Also, they can make a small closet feel very enclosed.
Whichever system you choose for your closet
designs, you can have a gorgeous, well-functioning system
that’s perfect for you.
