When
you’ve been staring at the mess of your closet for so long
that you’ve finally said, “Enough!” and
decided to tackle it, you are in desperate need of a way to organize
everything.
It’s time to develop your own closet
system.
Start by taking everything out of your closet and sorting it. Decide
what goes and what stays. This is a very important first step.
Now, take a few minutes and think about what
kind of system will work best for you. Do you work a corporate job,
wearing business casual or suits on a daily basis, with a separate
wardrobe for evenings and weekends?
Or are you a stay at home parent,
living in jeans, sneakers, and tees, with the occasional nice
“going out“ clothes?
Do you have a collection of
workout apparel that needs its own place? Is your job labor intensive,
with clothing that is specific to it? Do you wear a uniform?
Separate your clothing by function to create
your personal closet system. If you have a daily uniform, be it one
dictated by your workplace, or your daily “mom”
uniform of jeans and blouses, separate those pieces from the rest of
your garments. Same goes with shoes. Don’t stack your
sneakers on the same shelf as your dressy pumps, for instance.
Now, to really streamline your life, arrange
your clothes in the closet by function. Put all your workout gear in
one area. Keep the suits together, with their matching shoes close by.
Dressy slacks go near the dressy tops, and
golf shirts go near the nice
pants. Button-down shirts go near the suits they complement, and if you
wear them with slacks and no jacket, put those slacks nearby.
The idea of creating a system for yourself
is to make getting dressed quicker each morning. How many mornings have
you stood in your closet, wondering what to wear?
By having garments
that go together always situated near one another, you will save
yourself a lot of time.
You may even go so far with your closet
system
as to install drawers or place bins with the appropriate leg wear
(stockings, hose, socks) in the right part of the closet. Have fun with
it, and make it your own!
